Title: Night Terrors: Sex, Dating, Puberty, and Other Alarming Things
Author: Ashley Cardiff
Genre: Humour ~ Bio
Rating Out of Five: 3.75 (almost a 4!)
A book of humourous, sarcastic essays dedicated to, more or less, sexuality in some form.
She talks about porn, masturbating, religion and many other topics with its influence on sex and human interaction.
The title drew me to pick it up and skim through it, because seriously if it’s in the humour section and has sex in the title it’s going to have it’s funny moments. I found it to be an enjoyable read and ended up buying it. I will say right off the bat that if you are a religious person or dislike morbid humour (it is slight throughout the book) then you’ll likely not enjoy this book.
There was some very funny things she had to say and some of her descriptions were just perfect for me. There were some instances when it went beyond what I thought was funny and/or entertaining but they did not exceed the amount of stuff I liked. Actually for what little I have read by David Sedaris, she kind of reminded me of him.
I think the most important thing to do when reading this book is to keep an open mind. You should really do that with anything you read (or really, just in general) but this author is very opinionated! Which is wonderful even though I didn’t agree with her all the time. If you get offended before finishing the essay (chapter) you miss out on the explanation of her opinion and you lose the opportunity to be a little less ignorant regardless of your own opinion.
The general undertone of the entire book is don’t be an a$$hole (hahaha) and take responsibility for your actions! So simple and yet, for the most part, general human interaction these days is riddled with people of this sort. I’m sure many of us are guilty of it too, both of being an a$$hole and being irresponsible. I suppose one of my favourite things about this book is how well she applies humour to all these types of situations in her life. You gotta be able to laugh at yourself~!!
