Book Reviews ~ Batch

Title: Raised By Wolves
Author: Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre: Teen
Rating: Four

The main character is a young woman named, Bryn, who has been raised by a male-dominated werewolf pack. She is taken under the alphas care after she witnesses the murder of her parents when she was a small child. The pack alpha, Callum, is extremely protective and controlling, which causes them to head-butt on almost everything as she knows the rules of the pack but her instinct says not to follow it. Essentially, in this story, everything that is done and said is a part of a bigger picture but you don’t see all of that until it all kind of unfolds. Bryn is a very strong, loyal and passionate character and it’s very cool to see her come into her own as the story progresses. Plus, I really like strong, kick ass main character women, very awesome.

With the bombardment of vampire and zombie stuff everywhere nowadays, it’s very nice to have come across a, what seems to be, fantastic werewolf story. While there is plenty of “teen’ attitude from the characters, I feel like alot of the interaction between all the characters was quite mature. It’s a series that I think adults will like as well as teens.

Title: God of War
Author: Marv Wolfman
Genre: Graphic Novel ~ Fantasy
Rating: 2.5

This is a small story that is in between the first and second games. Present time is at that point and it flashes back in time, periodically, to before Kratos was even Ares’ servant when he was only the leader of Sparta. The flashbacks consist of his travels to find a cure for his daughter that will save her life, which he does, but his actions during that mission bring about the battle that binds him to Ares in the first game. It as definitely an interesting story and I liked that part but the artwork was terrible. It was so “messy” looking that the only reason that I finished was simply so I could have the whole story.

Title: I Am Number Four
Author: Pittacus Lore
Genre: Teen
Rating: Five

The main character, ‘John Smith'(4), is one of six aliens that are left of a race called Loriens. Nine children were sent to earth with their own guardians (Cepans) to escape from another alien race that attacked and destroyed their home plant. Three of the nine have been killed and now they (the mogadorians) are coming for number four.
Fantastic book! I read through most of it in one day but I stopped just shy of the last two chapters because I didn’t want it to be over that quickly. The next book comes out in August so I still have a lengthy wait for the continuation of this story. If you have only watched the movie, I absolutely recommend the book because there is some really cool stuff in the book that isn’t in the movie. Again, both the movie and the book are good but read the book after!

Title: Fushigi Yugi
Author: Watase Yuu
Genre: Manga ~ Shoujo, Fantasy, Romance
Rating: Four
# of Volumes: 18 volumes ~ Complete OR 6 volumes in VIZBIG format

Miaka Yuuki is an ordinary junior-high student who is suddenly whisked away into the world of a book, The Universe Of The Four Gods. There she becomes the priestess of the god Suzaku, and is charged with finding all seven of her Celestial-Warrior protectors.

About halfway through this series I got so irritated with the main female character, Miaka Yuuki, that I had to take a break from it. The story and the other characters were great and very interesting but she got on my nerves a little bit. Thankfully she does get her act together for the last handful of volumes in this series. It has a very satisfying ending my opinion and the art style is really nice as well. Watase-san does a good job overall, and it’s definitely worth a read.
